My phone rang twice and then once again. It was quite early for me as this is my day off and I did not expect anyone to call me or text me at nine in the morning. It was the group message from the people I am working with on Broadcasting Today. Someone was stabbed at my university.
I mean, are you serious? This is something that makes you feel sick. Yesterday I wrote a piece about my last year in Hendon saying it is such a strange place and today there is murdered young boy directly on a place where I usually spent so much time.
“A murder investigation has been launched after a man was fatally stabbed at Middlesex University campus in the early hours of this morning.”
My text message was saying the boy was stabbed after the African society party. How is this possible at the university where security guards are almost everywhere? When I usually sit on stairs next to the back doors of silent room in Shepherd´s Library eating my lunch as I do not want to disturb other students, the security man always come to me with the weird face saying I am not able to do that. What did happen when the fight begin? Where was the security provided by university for all society parties?
As a journalist I have been really interested in this story, but no one is able to provide me with the information I would like to gain. All I have are different sides of story where everyone is saying something else and real witnesses are not happy to say a single word. Maybe they are really scared.
My classmate who has been working on this story from the early morning has been called in at the office by her supervisor because they do not want the story out. What are they hiding?
Is this going to ruin university´s reputation? Many people are sure that it will, but in fact we will see it only in far future.
“The spokesman said the man was taken by London Ambulance Service to a West London Hospital in a critical condition but he died a short time later.”
African Caribbean Society, winner of the award for best society of academic year 2011-2012, is not ready to talk to anyone about the situation. I can see that this is very hard situation for them and for the Middlesex Student Union as this year they want to build many new societies. I as a president of journalism society am scared of bringing external people to the events we are organising. I have no idea what would I do if this happened to one of my parties.
“Police said no arrests have been made but an investigation is being led by officers from the Homicide and Major Crime Command under Detective Chief Inspector Nicola Wall. The victim is not believed to be a student.”
People still do not understand why the University is not closed. One of my classmates said: “Unfortunately that´s how society is. People die. The rest of the world goes on…”
We all feel really unsafe and we do not know what to expect from other days. We believe that the criminal will be arrested because maybe he is still somewhere out waiting for another victim.
