The London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham revealed the amounts of the toxic gases which public breathe on average per year at a council meeting yesterday.

Londoners are among the top 50 worst placed in the UK, according to Greater London Authority and Transport for London, with more than 9,500 killed each year, the council said, and they are urging for an action.

Cllr Larry Culhane, Hammersmith and Fulham Community Safety, Environment and Residents Service Policy Committee Chair, said he is proud to live in the best city in the world but the numbers of deaths caused by air pollution are “shocking and it must change.”

He also said people breathe unhealthy levels of NO2 every day and described the air pollution as one of the main things causing serious diseases as nearly 15% deaths are caused by excessive amounts of nitrogen dioxide in the air.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson called for an urgent action by Government and EU to discuss the Ultra Low Emission Zone, including the expansion of Heathrow in July this year. During the council meeting, council also criticized his allegations comparing London´s air quality to breathing the air in the Alps.

Cllr Adam Connell, a Labour councillor for Addison ward already mentioned the problems with air pollution in 1952. He said: “People died in result of air pollution and in 2014 we saw the great smoke again.”

The council criticized the Government and wants from the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson to take an action. Cllr Culhane said: “We want Boris Johnson and the government to tackle the silent killer.”
